The Whistlestop was a bustling restaurant and banquet hall for a several
decades. It was constructed 1874 to serve as the Kalamazoo depot for
the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad Line, and later as the Pennsylvania
Railroad Station. It stopped being used as a railroad depot in 1961 and
became a restaurant in 1963, changing hands several times before closing
in the late 80s. An adjoining
rear annex was a dance club during most of the 90s. It has since
been remodeled. In the early 1980's one of the banquet rooms regularly hosted
underground musical acts, and was the scene of a 1981 show by Lansing's
seminal band "The Fix" that inspired a new musical movement in
Kalamazoo including the formation of Violent Apathy.
