The Rickman hotel did a booming business from the turn of the century to the 1960s, mostly because of its close proximity to the Michigan Central Depot (which is used by Amtrak today). The building boasted Michigan's first elevator and a tasty buffet. Note the "fire-proof" claim, made also by the Columbia Hotel of the time. Was this a reassurance after the 1909 Hotel Burdick fire? In recent years the building has provided housing for "previously homeless chronically mentally ill single adults." |
